The historic resort village of Cashiers boasts a pleasant and pedestrian historic core, lined with century-old homes and stores. Most interesting is the 1840 estate house of the Zachary-Tolbert family, now a museum that houses 'plain style' furniture made by one of Cashiers’ first residents, Mordecai Zachary. The house is a good example of Greek Revivalist architecture. Cashiers' performing arts scene heats up in the summer. The Highlands Cashiers Music Festival features an exciting lineup of classical concerts. Groovin’ on the Green rolls out from summer through October with its free concerts embracing genres like classical and bluegrass among others.
The Highlands Nature Center and Biological Station meanwhile houses exhibits showcasing the mountain eco-system and regional bio-diversity. Equally charming is the Pisgah Center for Wildlife Education which houses a fish hatchery where kids can feed the trout in the nearby Davidson River.
