The beautiful backdrop of the Sandia Mountains invites Albuquerque's guests out for adventure. Hiking and mountain biking are the most popular activities, but less intrepid travelers can also enjoy stunning views from the Sandia Peak Aerial Tramway. Cross-country and downhill skiing are also quite popular during winter months.
Nearby lava flows make for a low-impact walk in the wilderness. Petroglyph National Monument is a short day trip that offers a glimpse into the area's ancient resident's lives and culture. Thousands of carvings and cave drawings can be found here, most between 400 and 700 years old.
