1. Arlington
Visit Arlington Cemetary to watch the changing of the guard at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier, and see the eternal flame burning at former president John F. Kennedy's grave. Book a guided tour of the Pentagon and learn about this important building's history and the work done there. Pay tribute at the Air Force Memorial, whose three 270-foot spires represent the missing man formation performed for Air Force funerals. Go on a cruise along the Potomac River from Gravelly Point Park and watch the planes landing and taking off at Ronald Reagan Airport.
2. Norfolk
Take a guided tour of the Battleship Wisconsin, which served in the US Navy from World War II to Operation Desert Storm. Spend a day at the Norfolk Zoo and walk along the elevated boardwalks to get a bird's-eye view of elephants, lions, and tigers. The maritime museum, Nauticus, offers guided cruises past downtown Norfolk and the Norfolk Naval Station – the largest in the world and home to the US Navy Atlantic Fleet. To go back in history, venture on a harbor cruise on the tall ship, the American Rover.
3. Virginia Beach
Head to First Landing State Park, where you can learn about the area's settlers, swim at the secluded beach, and hike one of the many trails. Visit the Virginia Aquarium's 300 hands-on exhibits, including two touch pools, for a day filled with learning and fun. Stroll along the Virginia Beach Boardwalk and stop at one of the many nearby restaurants for a meal with an ocean view.
