Macedonia was historically tied to the Kingdom of Macedon, ruled by the epic leader Alexander the Great in the fourth century BC. There’s an enormous statue and ornate fountain dedicated to this great ruler in the Center of Skopje Plaza.

The Archaeological Museum of Macedonia is also well worth visiting. It's housed in a stunning classical building on the banks of the Vardar River.
